The Gratte-Ciel
A rare French example of a modern, American-style city, the Gratte-Ciel of Villeurbanne have raised their brick towers on either side of Avenue Henri-Barbusse since 1934. The listed ensemble frames the town hall and its central tower. Looking up together from Place Lazare-Goujon always makes an impression: a first date that is at once original and unmissable.
TNP and cultural scene
Founded by Roger Planchon, the Théâtre National Populaire was long a flagship of French public theatre. It still programmes contemporary creations and major classics in a carefully restored Art Deco building. The Astroballe, meanwhile, buzzes to the games of ASVEL, the local basketball club. Picking the evening together is a simple and friendly plan.
Cours Émile-Zola and Tête d’Or
A long shopping thoroughfare, Cours Émile-Zola links Lyon to Villeurbanne and gathers terraces and shops. A short walk away, Tête d’Or Park, one of the largest urban parks in France, offers a lake, a rose garden and a free zoo. On Lyad, Villeurbanne members share their favourite spots; it is up to you to find someone to show them to you.
